How to Use the Legacy File Manager in cPanel

The Legacy File Manager offers file manipulation options in an older web-based interface, offered for those who are used to the older version of cPanel's File Manager.

If you have never used the File Manager before, it is suggested that you use the newer File Manager instead.

Accessing the File Manager

To use the Legacy File Manager:

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. Click the Legacy File Manager icon.

A list of files and folders will appear on the left, as well as links at the top for creating new folders and files, and uploading files.

Creating a New Folder

Once inside the Legacy File Manager, you can create a new folder by doing the following:

  1. Click on the Create a New Folder link near the top of the page.
  2. Type in the name of the new folder.
  3. Click on the Create button.

The new folder will appear on the list to the right.

Accessing or Manipulating Files & Folders

Clicking on a folder or filename will display options for file manipulation in the upper right hand corner.

Clicking on the folder icon will navigate inside that folder, allowing you to see the files and folders within that folder.

Some of the options available include:

  • Copy
  • Move
  • Delete
  • Download
  • Edit
  • Change Permissions
  • Rename

Creating a New File

You can create a blank file using the Legacy File Manager.

  1. Navigate to the folder that you want to file to be in.
  2. Click on the Create a New File link.
  3. Enter the name of the file you wish to create.
  4. Specify the type of file you wish to create.
  5. Click on the Create button.

A new empty file has been created, that you can now edit.

Edit a File

You can edit text based files, such as HTML files, TXT files, PHP files, and more using cPanel's built in editors.

  1. Click on the file you wish to edit.
  2. Options will appear in the upper right corner.
    • Click on Edit File for a text based file.
    • Click on Edit with Code Editor for an HTML, PHP or other we programming code.
  3. Follow any on screen directions.
  4. Be sure to save your work when complete.

Uploading a New File

You can also upload completed files to the server.

  1. Navigate to the folder that you want to file to be in.
  2. Click on the Upload File link.
  3. Click on the Choose File button to select the file from your computer you wish to be uploaded.
  4. Select the file you wish to upload using your operating system's dialog box.
  5. Repeat for as many files as you want to upload.
  6. Click on the Upload button.

Your file(s) are now uploaded to your web hosting account.
