The username is by default ‘root’, and the password will be sent to your registered email address. After entering the relevant details, click on ‘Log In’ In the WHM panel: After logging into your WHM panel, go to Home → SSL/TLS tab Managing AutoSSL: In the SSL/TLS tab, select Manage SSL (image 7), a new window opens image 7 In the below image, (image 8), Click on the Providers tab → Here choose your choice of provider. We have selected cPanel powered by Comodo → Click on Save image 8 Next, scroll to Manage Users tab, select the domain name you want to enable AutoSSL and click on ‘Enable AutoSSL on the selected user’. It takes 30 to 40 mins to reflect the changes. You can even disable AutoSSL by clicking on the ‘Disable AutoSSL on Selected User’. What is Virtualization and How Does it Work

The last decade has witnessed a boom and growth in IT like no other. The challenge for many IT managers, now, is to balance peak performing services with reduced costs. Essentially, getting as much as they can out of fewer resources. One solution that enables them to do so, is virtualization. So, let’s discuss virtualization, as it has provided many a business with the opportunity to grow and reach heights that they wouldn’t have imagined. We’ll start by answering a simple question: what is virtualization? Virtualization defined: Virtualization refers to the process of creating a “virtual” version of something – such as an operating system (OS), a server, network resources or a storage device. How Virtualization Works: With virtualization, an application, a guest OS or data storage is separated from the underlying software or hardware. A thin software layer, known as a hypervisor, reproduces the functions and actions of the underlying hardware for the abstracted hardware or software – creating multiple virtual machines on a single physical system. While the performance of these virtual machines may not be at par with the OS running on true hardware, it’s still more than enough for most systems and applications. This is because most systems and applications do not utilise or need the full use of the underlying hardware. When this dependency is removed, the virtual machines (created by virtualization) offers its customers greater isolation, flexibility and control. Next, let’s briefly look at the types of virtualization. Types of Virtualization: Initially, virtualization was meant largely for server virtualization. However, the popularity of the method has helped it expand and grow to include networks, applications, data, desktop and storage. We’ll discuss each type briefly. Network Virtualization: Communication networks today are large, ever-evolving and growing increasingly complex. Due to this, their dependency on hardware is high, making it an extremely rigid and expensive structure to operate. Making changes to it or launching new products and services, becomes a time-consuming process. This is where virtualization comes into effect. Network virtualization essentially splits up the available bandwidth into channels – each of which is separate and mobile (that is, each channel can be reassigned or assigned to a particular server or device in real time). Virtualization masks the true complexity of the network, by splitting it into manageable parts (thus allowing for changes to be made and resources to be deployed on those specific channels, instead of the entire network.) Storage Virtualization: This process refers to the pooling together of physical storage space from multiple storage devices, into one. This single storage device is then managed by a central console. Storage virtualization helps by cutting down on massive management costs and helps companies utilise storage effectively. Desktop Virtualization: In this process, a workstation is virtualized as opposed to a server. This allows the user to access the desktop remotely, using what is known as a thin client. (A thin client is a low budget endpoint computing device that depends heavily on a network connection to a central server for its computational activities). Since the workstation is now running in a data server, accessing it becomes easier and more secure. It also helps by discounting the need for an Operating System license and infrastructure. Data Virtualization: This is an approach to data management, where applications can retrieve and manipulate data, without the need for technical data. Essentially, data retrieval and management can be done without knowing where it is physically located, how it is formatted, or how it is sourced. It delivers broader access by providing a unified and integrated view of business data in (close to) real time as required by applications, processes, analytics and business users. Application Virtualization: This is when the application layer is abstracted away from the OS. This allows the application to run in an encapsulated form, without needing on the underlying Operating System. With application virtualization, a Windows app can run on Linux. Server Virtualization: This process is where the server resources are hidden from server users. This includes information like the number of servers, the identity of the users, processors and operating systems that are working on a single server. This way, the user doesn’t need to understand and manage the complexity of server resources. The process also increases resource sharing and utilisation, while maintaining the capacity to expand further. How virtual servers work: What enables server virtualization? A thin layer of software known as the hypervisor. The most common form is known as Type 1, where the layer sits on the hardware and virtualizes the hardware platform so that multiple virtual machines can utilize it. A type 2 hypervisor, on the other hand, uses a host operating system to create isolated guest virtual machines. Each virtual server mimics the functionalities of a dedicated server – on one server. Each server is then designated an individual and separate OS, software and rebooting provisions, via root access. In a virtual server environment, website admins and ISPs can have separate and different domain names, IP addresses, analytics, logs, file directories email administration and more. Security systems and passwords also function separately, as it would in a dedicated server environment. How to Choose the Best Caching Solution for Your Website

Consider this: you’ve set up your website and you finally have customers. However, the wait is long, and the website is slow to load. By the time it loads, you’ve lost your opportunity to convert a visitor to a paying customer – leading to a loss of revenue. In a matter of seconds, they’ve moved on. Why? Studies have shown that nearly half of the customers expect page load times of about three seconds. By recognizing this problem early enough, you can take steps to prevent this from happening. How? By implementing the right caching solution for your website. What is Web Cache? Caching refers to the process of storing data, temporarily, in a computing environment – namely a cache. When customers look at your web page, those files are automatically stored on the hard disk, in a cache subdirectory on their browser. When they return to look at that page, the browser can access those files from the cache, rather than returning to the original server to fetch the data again. Without caching: When a customer visits your website, the browser will send a request to your server for site data, like content, media, code etc. The data is then sent to the customer’s browser. Each piece of this data needs to be loaded individually before it can be displayed. There are always delays while the transfer is happening and a lot of additional factors that can slow the process down. For e.g., if the visitor is located far away from your server, it can adversely affect your loading time. With caching: The data is stored in a location close to your customer – it goes to where your customer is, cutting down on loading time. For example, web browser stores data at your customer’s end once the page is loaded for the first time. This reduces the page load speed by a mile for a returning user. The advantages are clear. What you need to do is choose a caching solution that suits your website. There are many methods of caching available. We’re going to discuss three: server caching, browser caching and caching plugins and how each could impact your website. Server caching: If your website is busy, dynamic, content heavy and experiences high volumes of traffic, you may want to look into server caching. One of the best cache servers is Varnish. This is how it works – when your customer visits your site, a series of requests are sent to the server to enable the page to load. The server then looks for the files pertaining to the request, execute any code related to that request and then return the web page to the user. By installing caching mechanisms like Varnish, it essentially acts as a middleman, between the user and the server and look out for duplicate requests from before. The next time the customer visits your website, Varnish will respond by quickly sending a cached version of the result. This can increase the speed of your site exponentially. It also cuts down on how much processing power you need to respond to high volumes of traffic. Browser caching: Whenever a browser loads a web page, it needs to download all the files to display the page properly – this includes HTML, CSS, images and JavaScript. If your website has a lot of files, you can face two issues – first, large files take longer to load (especially if your customers are using a slow internet connection). Secondly, each file makes a separate request to your server, which adds to the work your server needs to do. Browser caching will help by storing some of the files on your customer’s browser. The first time your customer visits your site, it may take time to load, but as they continue to interact with your website (either by refreshing, revisiting or even moving to another page on your site) files are being cached onto their browser. This cuts down on the data that your customer uses to load your site, and it saves bandwidth on your server. Browser caching works by identifying elements of your website that can be saved offline. These elements are those that are not likely to be changed on a regular basis – like your logo for instance. To enable browser caching, you’ll need to edit your HTTP headers in order to set expiry times for certain files. If certain files are updated frequently, you can give them shorter expiry times. Caching plugins: Currently, WordPress powers nearly 33 per cent of the web. If your website is one among this number, you can look at third-party caching plugins. These are simple and easy to install. The only catch is the sheer number of plugins available to you. However, some of these plugins are highly recommended, like W3 Total Cache, which offers caching via memory, disk or CDN (Content Delivery Network). It also removes unnecessary or redundant data on posts, pages, feeds, JavaScript and more. Thanks to this you can save on server bandwidth, which leads to increased server performance, reduced download time, and boosts conversion rates – all good news for you. Here’s proof: Etsy Etsy is an eCommerce boutique store that sells various handcrafted items from people around the world. So long as something is handmade, Etsy is interested and it’s pretty good at making others interested as well! Etsy is really good at making users engage. The first step is, of course, subscribing to their website. And this is the email you’ll receive: The second step would be personalization. However, you’re not required to personalize. Simply, Etsy will suggest that you should save this or that in your favourites for later, as you’re browsing. For example, most of my saved items are vintage dresses/jewellery and stationery. Look at the two follow-up emails I received at some point: Stationary and vintage products were the basis of the emails sent to me by Etsy. But there’s another little interesting tidbit that made Etsy what it is. If the user doesn’t add anything in their favourite items, it’s okay, as the website will point them in another direction: the Editor’s Picks one.   User Onboarding per Industry The basic principles may apply to all industries more or less, but it would be best if we pointed out how some key aspects work in some industries: E-commerce Welcome emails are important, as they raise brand awareness and help potential customers remember the brand and the name. A clear CTA like “Shop now” or “Take a look” will entice them. But let’s assume they haven’t interacted with your brand. Maybe you should consider sending them another email now, one with offers that they simply won’t be able to refuse. Create urgency by including an expiration date for your offer. Since cart abandonment is an issue many E-commerce sites face, send them an email to re-engage them, reminding the customers of their carts and offering similar products that could perhaps be on sale. Pro tip: This article will help you if you’re a start-up owner. Software as a Service (SaaS) A welcome email will work in your favour in that case as well. A friendly and easy-going look and feel would be the go-to solution for this category, with a CTA like “Show me around”. If the user hasn’t interacted with the product yet, do it like Dropbox! Send them a check-in email to remind them that they haven’t used the service. Like this: If this doesn’t work either, go for the “Last chance” email. Tell the customer that their account is about to expire and remind them of the value of your product. Ask them if they’d like to extend the experience or if they’d like to leave some feedback. The first thing you’ll need to do is get to know your user and map out their experience with your product. Create user personas, conduct surveys and test away. The data you’ll gather will give you a clear idea of where things could go or have gone wrong. That same data will help you find new ways to reduce friction and eliminate the risk of users losing interest in your product or service. Use hooks through your CTAs. Communicate your product’s value clearly, but leave something to be discovered. Again, testing here is very important, as it will help you determine which “ethical bribes” and which CTAs work best. And while we’re at it, educate your users with online assistants and give them tutorials to help them learn the basics. Personalize as much as possible. Have users enter their preferences in your platform and use the data accordingly. And for those emails: Users will be expecting a welcome email and first impressions count. Send your users emails with clear CTAs that will be consistent with your brand voice, send check-in emails that will entice them and “Last chance” emails that will make them think. If you are using a Linux based Operating System, then you can run the installation commands directly on your terminal. However, users who use Windows Operating System need to use an emulator. Therefore, to install WordPress you need to: Installing an emulator (Windows)/ Open terminal (Linux) Installing Softaculous on WHM via emulator/terminal Installing WordPress using Softaculous For the benefit of Windows Operating System users, we have listed the below steps to install an emulator called Putty. Putty is an open-source terminal and network file transfer application for Windows and can run the same commands you would run on a Linux based OS. 1. Installing Putty on your Windows machine Go to the official website of Putty Click on ‘Download Putty’ You will be redirected to a new page, where you need to download the package based on your Windows version (32-bit or 64-bit) After the .exe file is downloaded, click on Run and install it by clicking on ‘Next’ Once Putty is successfully installed, open the application like you would open any other  In the text box ‘Host Name or IP address’ type the IP address of your Control Panel i.e the URL in ‘#Image 07’ and click on Open The following window opens. Note: If you are using Linux, type these commands in the terminal directly after logging into cPanel. After logging into your control panel, type in the following command to fetch the installation files of Softaculous < wget -N http://files.softaculous.com/install.sh> After the files are fetched type in the command to change the access permission <chmod 755 install.sh> Now install the files by typing this command <./install.sh> and press Enter After the previous step, it will take a few minutes to install all the scripts. Wait till you get the message ‘Congratulations, Softaculous was installed successfully’ on the terminal screen To check if Softaculous is installed on the control panel: Log In to WHM Select Plugins on the Home Page (Add-Ons on older versions than 11) Softaculous – Instant Installs The following window opens if Softaculous is installed 3. Install WordPress using Softaculous Several scripts come pre-installed with Softaculous. Having successfully installed Softaculous, you can now install WordPress on VPS via cPanel. Go to the Softaculous dashboard and search ‘WordPress’. Once you find the icon (i.e the script) double click on it, this opens a new window Here, on the ‘Install’ tab enter the necessary details viz. the domain name you want to install the software on, protocol, language, etc. and click on the ‘Install’ button at the bottom of the page Once your software is installed, you would get the following message as seen in the image below on your screen. You can now customize your WordPress site as per your needs This was one way to set up WordPress on VPS, using the control panel. Let us now look at the manual way to install WordPress on VPS server if you don’t have a control panel. Installing WordPress Manually Without a Control Panel WordPress can be installed on your VPS in 4 simple steps and although this process is simple, it requires a technical background. So here we go: Create a Database and a User We would once again be using either the Putty (if Windows) or Terminal if using Linux OS to access the hosting server via SSH. After logging into your root account type in the following commands to create a databasemysql → Enter the database name create database database_name; → Replace your database name, username, and password in the command grant all privileges on database_name.* to database_user@localhost identified by ‘database_user_password’; The image below is a representation of the commands where:wp_database == database name wp_user == database user Passw0rd == password of the user Download WordPress WordPress can be downloaded in 2 ways viz: Upload the WordPress contents to your server via FTP or Directly download the files on the server via SSH We would be downloading WordPress viz the second method, using SSH. Step 1: Go to the website root directory of your domain For understanding purpose, let us consider your directory is /home/demobigo/public_html Type the following command: cd /home/demobigo/public_html Step 2: To download WordPress to your server, type in the following commands Fetch the file: wget http://wordpress.org/latest.tar.gz Extract: tar -xzf latest.tar.gz Step 3: WordPress will be extracted in a folder called WordPress inside /home/demobigo/public_html i.e /home/demobigo/public_html/ WordPress You can install WordPress on the main domain you purchased (rosetintedglasses.com) or even in a sub-directory (rosetintedglasses.com/blog). If you want to install it on the main domain then move the files by running the following commands: → cd /home/demobigo/public_html/WordPress → mv ./* /home/demobigo/public_html/ where cd == change directory and mv == move Note: If you’d like it on a sub-directory eg: blog, just create a folder named blog and move the files to it. Edit the WordPress Configuration file To edit the configuration file you can either create and edit the wp-config.php file manually, or let WordPress do the configuration itself when you run the installation script.If you wish to configure it yourself then run the following commands: Rename the file wp-config-sample.php as wp-config.phpTo do this, run this command in the directory you installed WordPress: → mv wp-config-sample.php wp-config.php Open the file wp-config.php using the editor (vi editor in Linux and vim editor in Windows)To do this, run this command in the directory where you installed WordPress: → # vi wp-config.php Edit the following fields by replacing the actual database details: DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD and DB_HOST as shown in the example above.
